Good Morning to a new America! In California, we huddled at my daughter, Jayme's, home last night to await election results. She prepared gumbo and cornbread - in honor of the swing states! Always a theme with Jayme's dinners! The election was called by 8:30 in California - the earliest I can ever remember. As President elect OBama made his acceptance speech, I encouraged those gathered to take note of where they were, and how they felt. We lived history huddled around the TV downing the banana pudding and cherry pie.

We will remember this historic night just as I remember being 5, sitting on the braided rug in front of the TV in my parent's living room watching frantic people running around crying. The pretty lady that looked so sad with the dark stains all over her rumpled pink suit. Mom ran in the house from her teller job at Bank of America crying hysterically screaming to the babysitter, "they shot the president!", to grab a transistor radio and return to work. The world stopped and for the next week. We just sat in front of that TV and watched the sad, dark, rainy images of a shattered nation - John John waving his little flag in his dress shorts and little jacket. Camelot was over.

Will the OBama's usher in a new Camelot? I think so. They are young, strong, intellegent, beautiful - in the soul as well as appearance. They usher in an administration that gives us a chance to become a better nation. More tolerant, more just, less discriminatory - no, I pray we will become "discrimination free"!

Amidst the happiness last night, were tears and frustration - because the same nation that voted in the first black president of the United States voted for increased discrimination against people who love differently then the majority of us do. Those born with preferences different from you and I were once again viewed as lesser citizens, dirty, segregated from the basic freedoms our constitution demands us to give all Americans. The votes are still being counted for Prop 8 here in California. At 9:28 am with 96% of precincts reporting the results are 52.2% "yes" to 47.8% no in favor of taking away the rights of gays and lesbians to marry their soul mates.

So, apparently we still have much to learn about rights, prejudice, discrimination. I resonate with the words of the man who gave his life for our freedom, "I have a dream..." To my dear friends and family who we have prevented from marrying, sharing benefits - including the previledge of being leagal parents to their own children, stand firm. Continue to be the beautiful, loving, peaceful people you are. I will stand in the gap with you and encourage others to give you the rights you were born with just as you were born with your preference. And one day soon, we'll sit in the living room and watch the HDTV, celebrating the landslide victory you will witness when this great nation takes another step toward being "discrimination free". It will come!
Love, Mom

I'm not trying to start political debate with a Holiday Recipe Swap.

But I do know that the country and it's policies weigh heavily on our minds and our hearts.

Muffin
1 can pumpkin
1 cup water
1 box spice/chocolate/carrot cake (pick one)

Crumbly Top
1-2 packages cinnamon or brown sugar oatmeal
Sugar to taste
Butter

Cream Cheese for inside

Mix cake mix water and pumpkin together in large bowl

pour into muffin cup til about 1/2 full. Press one small cube of cream cheese into cup and then cover with more mix.

Mix oatmeal, sugar to taste and butter until it is a pasty consistency. Plop on top of muffins.

Cook for 20 mins at 350.

Enjoy!

PS. This is a receipe that begs to be played with. You can include crannies or fresh berries in instead of cream cheese. Adding less water will also make muffins a little dryer for a different consistency.

Here is my lovely comment :D I really like your blog! I wanted to add that my recipe was passed to me by a lady who was friends with my grandparents, when we went to visit them in Oregon one year. She has since passed, but I still have the card and memories :) It's one reason I love baking/cooking and getting the kids involved in it too!
